Custom audio tests

Before you start: Check the output and lower device volume before running a recipe. Stop before changing connections. Imported settings are checked, but digital limits do not establish safe physical loudness.

Recipe library

Recipes, settings and observations stay in this browser. Imported recipes are safety-checked. Unsupported versions and unsafe settings are rejected.

Built-in recipes are ready to run or copy into your local library.

Set a safe repeatable level

Use a low, comfortable volume. Keep the same output device, cable and volume setting whenever you rerun this recipe.

Acceptance run historyLocal · self-reported

Record a completed recipe for a named device and path. Rerun the same recipe after changing one factor. Observations are listening reports, not calibrated measurements or proof of a faulty component.

How to use this test

Choose the signal level: New references start at -40 dBFS peak. Select up to 0 in 5 dB steps, then press Play. This is WaveLocus's selectable range, not an industry standard or a physical-volume measurement. Zero is full-scale digital output; lower device volume before playback.

Reference and scope: New custom signal steps use this peak-level range. Existing recipes keep their original method and limits until you deliberately change their level. REW documents why source RMS, peak and output calibration must be distinguished; it does not prescribe this menu range. REW signal-level conventions.

Keep the same versioned reference

A useful comparison retains the signal method, level convention, route, frequency, seed and duration. New finite references use the same generated source for live playback and export at the same sample rate. Older recipes keep their original meaning; long legacy noise playback and old exports may differ. Do not combine an old baseline with a new method as if the signals were identical.

How to interpret your custom audio tests results

A reference is clear or has an issue: This records your observation at the recipe settings, not a calibrated pass or failed component. Keep the original settings for the next comparison.

Settings and method match: A controlled comparison also requires the same output path and listening or capture conditions, apart from the factor deliberately changed.

The method, sample rate or reference differs: Keep the results separate. A different signal cannot establish whether the equipment improved.

Frequently asked questions

How do I repeat an audio test recipe?

Choose a built-in or saved recipe, keep the output and settings unchanged, and record the observation after each reference. Export the recipe if you need to reproduce its settings elsewhere.

Are recipes and observations stored online?

They stay in this browser unless you choose to export or share them through another service. Keep your own exported copy if you need the recipe on another device.

What should stay unchanged when comparing two runs?

Keep the recipe, signal settings and listening conditions unchanged apart from the single factor you want to test. Record what changed. Changing several settings together makes it harder to explain a different result.
